Hollywood’s special makeup effects artists are frequently tasked with giving characters convincing injuries. The job involves a deep understanding of both what the human anatomy looks like and what looks best on camera. “The Irishman” required a broken hand, meaning a fake forearm that looks real while also moving and bending the way a real mangled arm would. Meanwhile, HBO’s “I Know This Much Is True” got rid of Mark Ruffalo’s arm by painting his real hand green and using visual effects to erase it. These injuries also involve knowing how much fake blood should burst out of them, like when John Cusack got his neck slashed in “The Grifters” and when John Travolta’s fingers were shot off in “The Fanatic.” The surgery scenes in “The Knick” and “Westworld” involved knowledge of both the outside and the inside of the human body, while the references used to create burn wounds are not quite what you would expect.
